Van MOT results published for the first time

The Fiat Doblo is the best van for passing its first MOT, with 84% of those registered in 2013 passing the test in 2016.

The worst, according to government figures, is the Ford Transit, with less than two-thirds (64%) of the 2013 cohort passing in 2016.

The figures were obtained and analysed by website after a Freedom of Information request and a campaign to make the data public.

Other top performers are the Ford Ranger (81%), Toyota Hi-Lux (80%), Isuzu D-Max (80%) and Nissan Navara (79%). At the other end of the table, and faring only slightly better than the Transit, are the Citroen Dispatch (66%), Vauxhall Movano (67%) and Citroen Relay (67%).

The data reveals that, on average, almost 30% of vans will fail the first MOT, with lighting, brakes and tyres among the most common reasons for failure – a concern, says the website, given that the government is proposing to extend the first MOT for vans from three to four years.

Daniel Powell, managing editor of, said: “On the face of it, MOT pass rates for vans are much lower than that of cars. However, it’s important to note that an average van will cover almost twice as many miles as a car over the first three years of its life.”
